William Henry and Charles were both born in Woodgreen, Hampshire. At the time of the 1911 Census William was working as a Gardner and Charles was working as a plate layer. Both men lived on Ganger Farm in Romsey, Hampshire. The farm still runs today.
William attested at the age of 32 on the 14th of April 1916 and landed in France on the 31st of August 1916. He had previously served with the Somerset Light Infantry, Worchester Regt and the Surreys! Before he finally joined the 1/23rd London and went to France with them.
He was sadly killed in action on the 2nd of October 1916 when the battalion attacked towards the Flers Line and received heavy casualties due to Machine Gun fire. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
Charles served with the 1st battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment Joining up on the 5th of January 1914 and landing in France on the 14th of August 1914. He was discharged due to sickness on the 18th of April 1917.
