Charles H Seale was born in Exmouth in June 1880, the son of Henry and Mary Searle. At the time of the 1911 Census Searle was working as a Butler in the residence of John Kirkaldy Cunningham, a retired Merchant. The house was located in Sector, Axminster, Devon. Cunningham also employed Charles wife as a Cook.
Searle served in the 134th Field Ambulance which was part of the 118th Brigade, 39th Division. As has been noted the MM was gazetted on the 18th of October 1917, it’s clear that Searle won his MM during the Third Battle of Ypres. Charles medal index card confirms entitlement to a pair.
