John Patterson Hall was captured on 3rd April 1941 at Cyrenaica during the African campaign. He was held in the camp '54 farm Sabina'
On the 8th of September 1943, the prisoners were informed of the Italian Armistice. Hall's section commander advised the men to stay as one body until the Germans approached and then to take to the hills and hide until the allies arrived. However, on the 11th of September Hall noticed that some Italian guards were leaving their posts. Along with six other men, he decided to break out and escape to the Allied lines. Hall managed to find an American unit the following day and thus complete his escape.
