1914/15 Star to TZ1312 M Pattinson AB RNVR / Wounded in VC action
Matthew Pattinson was born in Gateshead. A member of the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve Tyne Zone.
On 9th January 1915, he was placed on the nominal roll of A company Hawke battalion Royal Naval Divison. He was wounded at Gallipoli on 15th July 1915 by a bullet to the shoulders and neck; it was described as a light wound.
Upon recovery, he served in France and was again wounded to the neck on 13th November 1916 at the Battle of Ancre. Lt-Col Bernard Freyberg, serving with Hood battalion won his Victoria cross that day. The Hawke battalion was to the left of Hood in the action.
The wound was severe enough to end Pattinson's war.
