DCM 1914 Star Bar Trio and Belgium C de G to 21563 SHT C Whiting 25 / MGC late York R
Charles Joseph Whiting was a native of Poplar London born. A pre-war regular he served in France & Flanders with the 2nd battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
He was subsequently transferred to the Machine Gun Corps serving with the 25th.
He was awarded the Belgium Croix De Guerre, announced in the London Gazette on 8th July 1918. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, announced 3rd September 1918 with the following citation.
' For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of two Vickers guns, -which he continued to visit and encourage the crews of through a heavy barrage, successfully withdrawing them later on. When
the enemy had approached close to the guna in their new position he observed for them and controlled them in spite of hostile snipers
and machine-gun fire, and has always shown exceptional coolness in action.'
