Campaign group to 6395606 SJT C H Upperton ACC / late Suffolk R and 2 Para
Charles Henry Upperton was born on 4th March 1909; he enlisted at Chichester on 13th January 1928. Charles saw service with the 2nd battalion of the Suffolk Regiment on the Northwest Frontier in 1930-31.
Part of the BEF he was wounded in France on 22nd May 1940, it is noted on the roll that his rank was DMR ( Drummer).
He recovered from his wounds and saw service in Africa and took part in the battle of El Alamein. He volunteered for the Airborne when the 2nd Suffolk became the 10th Parachute Battalion. He did jump training at Kabrit in April 1943 and joined the 2nd battalion of the Parachute Regiment; he didn't take part in D Day of operation market garden, during which he was part of the Second Echelon of the Seaborne Tail. The force returned to the UK having not been used.
He was transferred to the Army Air Corps and saw service in Palestine in the post-war years. Awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal and discharged in January 1949.
