John Owens was born in Notting Hill in 1871. A labourer by trade, he attested at Hounslow on 13th May 1889, joining the 19th Hussars.
Owens fought in The Boer War, serving as a Sergeant. He was entitled to the Queens South Africa Medal with clasps; Belfast, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, Tulega Heights and Laings Nek. Owens was also awarded the Kings South Africa Medal with bars 1901 & 1902.
Discharged in 1910, having been awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal in 1907.
Owens again volunteered for service on the outbreak of The Great War; he served with the 1st Bn Royal East Kent Yeomanry from 8th October 1915 onwards. He was mentioned in Despatches for his service with the MEF, London gazette, 22nd January 1919.
