Casualty GV Military Medal group to 26268 Pte G Dewhurst 4/ Liverpool Regt
George Dewhusrt was a native of Ramsbottom, Lancashire. A member of the 4th Bn Liverpool Regiment, he landed in France on 14th July 1915.
He was sadly killed in action during the attack at Viller- Guislan on 29th September 1918 during the Battle of St Quentin. The 4th Bn was with the 98th Bde, part of the 33rd Division. He was laid to rest in Villers-Guislain Communal Cemetery, France
He was awarded the Military Medal, which was gazetted on 13th March 1919. It is possible that he was awarded the MM for the action in which he was killed, however, that doesn't match up to Williamson's research which states that this gazette date was for the period 8th August to 3rd August 1918.
The Bn war diary states on 3rd August 1918 ' 1 Officer and 24 OR carries out a raid on Blauwe Poort Farm.' On the 24th of august it was written 'G.O.C 33 Division presents medal ribbons at a ceremonial parade at Nortleulinghem'.
MM = 26268 Pte G Dewhirst 4/ L'Pool R
1914/15 Trio = 26268 Pte G Dewhurst 4/ L'Pool R
Please note the different spelling of the surname, records show that the MM card shows Dewhirst.
