The group is housed in a lovely contemporary case, with his name embossed on the lid. Included is the ' History and memoir of the 33rd battalion MGC, which has been rebound. However, it has some damage; it is a rare book and 1 of 1600 copies printed.

Robert Sames Auterac was born on the 2nd of May 1897 in Islington, London. The son of George Sames and Clara, he attended Christ's Hosptial School in Horsham, Sussex. He was a member of the OTC and immediately after leaving school joined the RNAS as an Air Mechanic until 13th of Ocotber 1915.

On the 16th of October 1915, Auterac applied for a commission; he was successful and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 10th Royal Sussex Regiment. He landed in France on 24th July 1916 and was attached to the 28th Company Machin Gun Corps.

Robert was sadly killed in action on 18th October 1918 on the Somme. He is remembered on the Thiepval memorial.
