British War Medal, correctly impressed 22-1180 Pte J W Cope North'D Fus
Boxed Defence Medal and War Medal. Addressed to, J Cope ESQ 5, Ocean Road, North, Grangetown, Sunderland County Durham.
John William Cope was born on the 30th of December 1878. A Miner by trade from Ryhope, Sunderland. He joined the 22nd Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, Tyneside Scottish, on the 5th of January 1915.
Twenty years previously, he had severely injured his knee in the mine, and this injury caused arthritis. Due to this, he was transferred to the 1st Bn Northumberland Fusiliers, which was on Garrison duty in Malta. Serving there from the 17th of August 1915 until the 28th of August 1916
He was discharged on the 6th of November 1917 and passed away in 1962.
His son Joseph Cope was born on the 10th of April 1904 in Sunderland. In civilian life, he was a telephone operator. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Airforce. Joseph passed away in 1980.
