Norman Ormsby Burge was born on the 9th of April 1876 in Scotland. He enlisted in the Royal Marine in 1895, being commissioned as Second Lieutenant on 1st February 1895.
 
He saw service at Ostend between 26th August and 1st September 1914, at Dunkirk from 19th September to 13th October 1914 and was present at the Defence of Antwerp on the 13th October 1914. 
 
He was appointed 2nd in Command of a Cyclist Company in the RND on 8th December 1914. he landed at Gallipoli on the 3rd of May, 1915. On the 19th July 1915, Burge was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and given the command of Nelson Bn RND. He was one of the last men to leave the peninsula and was instrumental in the evacuation succeeding. 
 
Burge was Mentioned in Despatches for his service at Gallipoli. The award was published in the London Gazette on the 28th of January 1916.
 
On the 22nd of May 1916, he went to France with his Bn and was sadly killed in action at the Battle of Ancre on the 13th of November 1916. He was laid to rest in Hamel Military Cemetery, Beaumont - Hamel.
