Afghanistan 1878-80, no clasp. Correctly engraved to Lieut: G. Shields, 1/12th Regt.

 

Condition VF 

 

George Shields was born in Carlisle on the 10th of February, 1839. He attested on the 9th of January 1856, aged 17 years, joining the 6th Foot.

 

He was awarded an Indian Mutiny Medal as a Private and an Indian General Service Medal with clasp 'Northwest Frontier' as a Colour Sergeant.

 

While serving as a Quartermaster Serjeant, he was commissioned into the East Suffolk Regiment on the 4th of December 1872.

 

He saw action in the Second Afghan War with the 1st Bn and was awarded the Afghanistan Medal. By the 19th of June 1884, he was serving as an Honorary Major (Paymaster)with the Blackwatch. He was serving in Natal on the 5th of June 1889 as a 'Staff Paymaster'.
