14/15 Trio & Defence to a Drummer in the 11th Sherwood Foresters

Edward Woodword Oliver was born in Patricroft Lancashire in 1888. Pre World War One Oliver worked at the County Lunatic Asylum, Cheddleton, Leek. His job title was “Asylum Attendant”.

Oliver attested on the 12^th of September 1914, on the 19^th he was posted to the 11^th battalion of the Sherwood Foresters. On the 1^st of November 1914 he was made a drummer. His next of kin was given as Annie of 38 Alma Street, Eccles, Manchester, Lancashire.

Oliver landed in France on the 27^th of August 1915, the most interesting part of his papers is the Regimental Conduct Sheet. It shows that on the 26^th of October 1915 Oliver “quitted stand billets without a pass” he was subsequently awarded 7 days of field punishment number two. CSM Hull was a witness; Hull was later awarded an MSM.

Oliver was placed in the reserves on the 24^th of February 1919. The presence of the Defence medal suggests service with the Home Guard during World War Two.

The medals are mounted as worn, however the star ribbon has deteriorated over time and the star is hanging off, but still connected. Please see the pictures for further details.
