William John Greatholder was born in Derby on the 9th July 1894. In civilian life he was a Chauffeur and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on the 15th of October 1914. He was initially a mechanic on armored cars and served in land operations in France and Flanders.

Greatholder was retrained as an Air Mechanic in March 1916.

Transferred to the Royal Airforce on the 1st of April 1918 and was awarded the Airforce Medal which was gazetted on 3rd June 1919.
