William John Greatholder was born in Derby on the 9^th July 1894. In civilian life he was a Chauffeur and joined the Royal Naval Air Service on the 15^th of October 1914. He was initially a mechanic on armored cars and served in land operations in France and Flanders.

Greatholder was retrained as an Air Mechanic in March 1916.

Transferred to the Royal Airforce on the 1^st of April 1918 and was awarded the Airforce Medal which was gazetted on 3^rd June 1919.
