James Halpin was born in 1873. He served in the Second Boer War with the 4th Bn Durham Light Infantry; he was awarded a Queens South Africa Medal with clasps Cape Colony,  Orange Free State and South Africa 1902. 
 
Transferred to the reserves, he re-engaged on the 2nd of September 1914 back into the 4th Bn with service number 4/9725. He was posted to the 14th Bn on the Western front sometime in early 1916. Halpin was awarded the Military Medal while serving as a Sergeant, possibly a very early Somme award or likely for The Battle of Flers Courcelette. The MM was gazetted on the 27th of October 1916, and a Mention in Despatches was given on the 4th of January 1917. 
 
Halpin was discharged on the 11th of June 1917, having risen to the rank of Acting Warrant Officer 2nd class.
