George Stubbs was born in Drewsbury in 1895. For a period, he lived and worked in Middlesbrough as a labourer. His father was the manager at Messrs Freeman, Hardy and Williams in Middlesborugh.

 

George attested at Richmond on the 3rd of September 1914 and joined the 10th Bn Yorkshire Regiment. On the 9th of September 1915 he landed in France as a Corporal, two weeks later he was to win the DCM on the first day of the battle of Loos,

 

'For conspicuous gallantry during the action at Hill70, southeast of Loos, on the 25th and 26th September 1915, in conveying messages under continuous and galling fire. Corporal Stubbs gave a fine example of total disregard of danger and of devotion to duty'

 

The award was announced in the London Gazette on November 16, 1915. A few weeks later, Stubbs was promoted to Sergeant. He was awarded the Military Medal for actions in the trenches at Fricourt on April 30th 1916, during which he was wounded. 

 

On the 8th of February 1917 he was demoted to the ranks after having been found guilty at court-martial of drunkness on duty. 

 

Stubbs survived the war, being disagreed due to no longer being physically fit. For a period, he lived in West Hartlepool before returning to Dewsbury.
