A British War Medal to 271271 Pte H Ross Royal Scots

Killed in action 30^th September 1918 formerly Lanarkshire Yeomanry

Ross was born in Dazell Lanarkshire and lived in Cockburnspath, Berwickshire

The medal is impressed 271271, but interestingly Ross had been a member of the Lanarkshire Yeomanry with service number 760. He then transferred to the Scottish Rifles with Service number 238149. Finally moving to Royal Scots with service number 271271, normal procedure was to impress the medal with the number and regiment then man attested too. Strangely his medal index card makes no mention of his previous service with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry nor the Scottish Rifles.

His service papers from his time with the Lanarkshire Yeomanry are online a total of 11 pages. Which includes a letter from his wife to the company commander thanking him for his letter and card of sympathy and the cards of sympathy from the N.C.O and men of the battalion but as of yet had had no official word or telegram concerning the death of her husband

He was a member of the 17^th battalion Royal Scots which was formed in Edinburgh in February 1915 by Lord Rosebery.

Ross was killed in action on the 30^th September 1918 and is buried in Zantvoorde British Cemetery along with 449 other burials.

The medal believe it or not was actually found in a skip! I dread to think if the Victory Medal and Plaque were at the bottom of the skip!.

Due to it being thrown away the suspender is a little bent out of shape, easy to straighten out if you so wished.
