Original recommended for a Military Medal. His award of the IDSM was announced in the London Gazette on the 24^th May 1945. The original citation is as follows;

‘During the period under review 16 November to 1 February 45 L/NK Chhelu Ram has shown a very high standard of gallantry in action, leadership and determination. At Sadwingyi on 29th December 44, his section was attacking a Japanese bunker position. In face a very heavy and accurate enemy fire he led his section with the highest courage, determination, refusing to give up the attack in spite of heavy casualties. Eventually he was the only survivor of his section. Nevertheless, undaunted he continued to close with the enemy position getting within 15 yards range. From this position he single handed fought the enemy for 12 hours going from one to another of his fallen comrades to collect grenades and ammunitions from them to enable him to continue the fight. Finally, he was able to exterminate the Japanese defenders with grenade and bayonet,  bayoneting three of the enemy. Again during the prolonged bitter fighting in the Irrawaddy Bridgeheads, L/Nk Chhelu Ram has continued to lead a section with bravery and determination. On several occasions, he's been in positions which have been attacked by the Japanese with fanatical fury after very heavy concentrations of shell and mortar fire. L/Nk Chhelu Ram  never waved and in spite of considerable casualties to our troops has never failed to hold on. Throughout the campaign this NCO has set a consistently high standard of grim determination, personal bravery and leadership which has been an inspiration to his men’
