John Humphrey was born in Middlesbrough and enlisted inMiddlesbrough. He was the son of the late Alexander and Mary Ann Humphrey.

 Ray Westlakes book “Somme” shows that on the 27^th of September the battalion attacked Hessian Trench and Stuff Redoudt along with the 9^th battalion. ‘B’ and ‘C’ companies took Hessian Trench in the afternoon and the other companies entered Stuff Redoudt and found what was left of the 9^th battalion. Captain A.C.T White then made a composite company of the two battalions and fought until relieved on the night of the 30^th. White was later awarded a VC for his work during the period 21^st September 1916 to 1^st October.
