Samuel was born in Bradford in 1893 the son of William and Hannah Smith. Samuels medals index card confirms he was entitled to a pair. He was sadly killed in action during the Second Battle of Bullecourt while serving with the 2nd/7th Battalion of the West Riding Regiment. The offensive was called off on the 17th of May 1917, after heavy losses. Samuel is remembered on the Arras memorial
