John Armstrong landed in Gallipoli on the 10.7.1915, he was killed in action on the 19th August 1915 while serving with the 8th battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. SDGW list 105 casualties for this date, John along with 69 other men is listed as having 'died', this is incorrect.
On this date the 8th battalion attacked an objective 700 yards in front of their lines. The objective was not reached due to machine gun and small arms fire, the battalion took cover in a gully. Which was then shelled at first light.
War diaries note 23 other ranks killed, 88 missing. John was obviously listed as missing, having been killed in the attack and his body never recovered. He is remembered with honour on the Helles Memorial.
