John Laidler was born in Middleborough on the 22nd September 1897. He enlisted in the Navy on the 24th of August 1916.
Copies of his service papers will be included, which are not very easy to read. It seems he served aboard H.M.S Drake which was torpedoed and sunk by U-79 on the 2nd of October 1917 off Rathlin Ireland, 18 hands were lost.
John survived the war passing away in 1983 while living in Cleveland.
