Robert Mitcheson was born in St Chuberts, Hebburn, County Durham in 1881. A Ship yard labourer by trade, at the time of the 1911 census he was living at 13 Back Rose Street Hebburn New Town.
Robert first served in the 2nd battalion of the Durham Light Infantry, landing in France with them on the 8th of August 1914. He was later transferred to the 2nd battalion of the Kings own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was sadly killed in action with them on the 17th of July 1915.
The battalion’s war diary for this day states, that the battalion where in St Eloi trenches. The enemy exploded a mine 15 yards in front of the front line trench. Throughout the rest of the day the battalion were subjected to a sustained bombardment which resulted in many casualties. War diary will be included.
He was laid to rest in the Voormezeele Enclosure No.3. Which interestingly is the same cemetery in which George Llewelyn Daviesis buried. Davies was the model for J.M. Barrie.
