John Clasper was born in Byker, Northumberland in 1884, a labour by trade he enlisted in Newcastle Upon Tyne joining the 19th Northumberland fusiliers (2nd Tyneside Pioneers)
Entitled to a pair only he was transferred to 22nd Tyneside Scottish with whom he was killed on the 5th of June 1917, he is record as having ‘died’ but his body was never recovered and he is remembered on the Arras memorial. It’s really the case that he was killed in action during the attack on Greenland Hill
