John Carney was born in Low Speenymoor in 1896. Living at 9 Pearson Street, in civilian life he worked as a Washer.
He attested at Cocker Hall in Bishop Auckland on the 5th of August 1915. He landed in France on the 31st of January 1916
Under specialist training it is noted he was a Lewis Gunner. In a handwritten letter included in his service papers Carney makes the claim that he was awarded the Military Medal on the 11th Of November 1918, the final day of the war. The award was gazetted on in June 1919.
