A native of Hexham he first joined the Tyneside Scottish with number 26/872 and is confirmed as being a member in Sheens book. It is wrongly noted he was wounded in October 1916. His papers show he was wounded at La Boisselle on the 1st of July 1916. It seems he was transferred to another battalion in the Northumberland Fusiliers first serving with them in France before being transferred back to the Tyneside Irish. This explains the different number and lack of prefix. After his wounded he was transferred to the Labour Corps and awarded a pension.
