James was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian. He attested on the 21st of September 1914 will living in Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne. He gave is trade as Miner.
He had previously served 3 years in the Northumberland Fusiliers Territorials.
A member of the 15th battalion he landed in France on the 11th of September 1915. He was wounded on the Somme 16.9.1916 a gunshot to the Abdomen. The wound was a blighty and he spent nearly a year recovering.
He went back to joining the 3rd battalion, listed as missing on the 29th of October 1917 and later confirmed as having been killed in action.
Hutchinson is remembered on the Tyne Cot memorial.
