James was born in Dalkeith, Midlothian. He attested on the 21^st of September 1914 will living in Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne. He gave is trade as Miner.

He had previously served 3 years in the Northumberland Fusiliers Territorials.

A member of the 15^th battalion he landed in France on the 11^th of September 1915. He was wounded on the Somme 16.9.1916 a gunshot to the Abdomen. The wound was a blighty and he spent nearly a year recovering.

He went back to joining the 3^rd battalion, listed as missing on the 29^th of October 1917 and later confirmed as having been killed in action.

Hutchinson is remembered on the Tyne Cot memorial.
