Francis Burns enlisted on 9th November 1914. A member of the 2/5th Bn he landed in France on the 4th May 1915 as a Corporal. 
 
Burns was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions during an attack at Guillemont on 9th August 1916. The awarded was announced in the London Gazette on 1st January 1917. The citation is as follows; 
 
'For conspicuous gallantry in action. He rendered most valuable assistance in re-organising the men after the attack and set a splendid example throughout'
