Arthur Sidney James Barter was born on August 24th 1891, in Lymington, Hants. In civilian life, he was a Barman.

Barter joined the Royal Navy on August 24th 1909, signing on for 12 years.  He joined HMS Bulwark on April 25th 1914, and was killed on November 26th 1914, when the ship exploded due to improperly stored ammunition.

Seven hundred forty-one men were killed, with only a dozen ratings rescued. All the officers were killed in the accident.
