Albert was a member of the 1^st Bn Dorset Regiment when the following deed took place;

‘On 11 August 1944, near St. Pierre La Vieille, Corporal Lewis’s company was engaged in an attack on the enemy positions barring the way to Conde sur Noireau. The Company gained their objective shortly before dark under very heavy Spandau and mortar fire and Corporal Lewis was an outstanding example to his men during the consolidation. Shortly afterwards the enemy fired a large phosphorous bomb which hit one of our tanks, wounded several of our men, and caused temporary confusion. Corporal Lewis was himself wounded on this occasion but remained in control of the situation. He personally re-organised the position and the evacuation of the casualties under intense fire and refused to be treated himself until the situation was completely in hand. Corporal Lewis’s action greatly assisted the success of the day’s operations on his front, and his behaviour was an inspiration to his company.’

Lewis was sadly killed in action on the 4^th of October 1944 during the Battle of the Nijmegen Salient. He is buried in Mook Cemetery
