Edward Arthur short was born in Shildon County Durham. In May 1939 he joined the South Staffordshire Regiment and was posted to the 2nd/6th battalion

Edward won the Military Medal on the 17th of July 1944 during Operation Pomegranate which took place from the 16th of July to the 18th of July 1944 during the second battle of the Odon in Normandy.

 The original citation is as follows,

 On 17 July 1944 in the vicinity of Noyers, Private Short was one of the two stretcher bearers who were searching for wounded did in front of our lines, during a period of considerable enemy shellfire. Immediately afterwards he discovered in Curry back a wounded man and although blown over by his shell and bomb blast, carried on under heavy fire until a casualty was eventually evacuated on a career. Throughout this time the line for evacuation of wounded from Noyer station to battalion HQ was under continuous shelling and mortaring by the enemy, but the stretcher bearers worked on in a most praiseworthy manner under these very trying conditions and shown considerable determination and courage. It was only by the personal devotion to the duty of these two men that a large number of casualties were evacuated’

Short’s military medal was announced in the London Gazette on Thursday the 19th of October 1944.

When the 59th Division was broken up, which 2/6 S Staffs were part of, Short was transferred to the 4th battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment. The battalion was part of the relief force which tried to reach British Airborne units to Arnhem.

Short was wounded on the 3rd of October 1944 but ultimately survived the war. After discharge he moved to rough hills in Wolverhampton and he later became a Chelsea pensioner where he died age 66 on the 19th of April 1988.
