Joseph Walsh was born in Blackburn and was Weaver by trade. He attested on July 17th 1812, aged twenty years, joining the 6th Foot.  During his service, he was court-martialed and imprisoned on at least seven different occasions.

Walsh served in the East Indies for two years, in France & Spain for four years. Taking part in the Battle of  Nivelle on November 10th 1813, and The Battle of Orthez on February 27th 1814

Posted to Canada, he was among the men of the 6th Foot that took part in the Siege of Fort Erie between August 4th - September 21st 1814, which was one of the last actions of the 1812 War.

He was discharged in 1837.
