David James Henry Kay was born in Lerwick on the Shetland Islands. He joined the territorials in 1909, aged 18 years; he gave his occupation as Clerk and was employed by the family business. His territorial unit was the Shetland Company of the Gordon Highlanders.
Kay completed all the annual training camps, until 1914 when he was embodied and promoted to Corporal on 28th August 1914.
He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on the 11th January 1916, joining the 3/7thBn Gordon Highlanders. Kay then served as a Captain with the 184th machine Gun Company in France. He was invalided back to the UK on 22nd December 1916 due to sickness (dysentery). After a period of recovery, he served in Itlay with the 48th MGC and was discharged in 1919.
Kay went on to become a Master Baker and died in 1964.
