Charles Alban Furniss was born on 5th June 1892 in Liverpool. At the time of the 1911 census, he lived at 82 Snaefell Avenue, Tuebrook, Liverpool and worked as a Marine Insurance Clerk. He joined the Territorials on 23rd February 1914, aged 21.
On the outbreak of the Great War, he was mobilised and landed in France with the 1st/ 5th Bn Liverpool Regiment on 21st February 1915. He was awarded the MSM, announced in the London Gazette on 18th January 1919. A citation has survived for the award.
‘This N.C.O. has acted as Battalion postman since February 1915. I cannot speak too highly of this N.C.O.’s devotion to duty. The bringing up of letters, parcels etc., under all conditions has often excited the admiration of all ranks, and there has never been one occasion where mails etc., in his possession, have not been delivered, whatever apparent difficulties were in the way.
Furniss returned to his job as Marine Insurance Clerk and continued until he died in 1950.
