John Robert Stevens was born at 83 New Tythe Street Long Eaton Nottingham on 19th July 1904. 
 
Stevens fought in France in 1939 and 1940, serving with the 5th Bn Sherwood Foresters ("B" Coy 11 Platoon). He was evacuated through Brest Via Cherbourg. 
 
The 5th Bn was later posted to Singapore and was with the BHQ when Singapore fell on 14th February 1942. Stevens was taken prisoner by the Japanese and was forced to work on the Thai - Burma Railway with group 4 in Kanchanaburi. 
 
He survived his imprisonment and was repatriated to the Uk via Steam Ship Oranade via Rangoon. John passed away in Derby in 1987.
