Robert Swinton Kenyon was born on 4th February 1899 in Manchester. After leaving  Salford Secondary School, he undertook an apprenticeship at the Royal Aircraft Factory in Farnborough. 
 
He attested on 3rd April 1917, joining the 67th Training Reserve Battalion as Private 17846. He was commissioned into the Royal Flying Corps in October 1917 as a Second Lieutenant and began flight training in November 1917. 
 
After earning his wings, Kenyon was posted to 107 Squadron as a DH9 Pilot. From September 1918, he took part in several bombing raids on railway lines and German positions. 
 
He survived the war and saw further service during World War Two, being granted a temporary commission as a Pilot officer in 1940. Kenyon served in an administration and special duty role. He was Mentioned in despatches and retired as Squadron Leader in 1954.
