George Le- Hardy was born in St Helliers, Jersey in 1872. A Farmer in civilian life, he attested to the Manchester Regiment on 20th September 1892. 
 
He went on to serve 21 years, taking part in the Second Boer War from 15th March 1900 until 26th October 1902. He was awarded the QSA with bars Cape Colony, Transvaal and Wittebergen, along with the KSA.
 
Discharged in 1913, he worked as a Carpenter and settled in Manchester. In 1915 aged 42, Le - Hardy re-enlisted, joining the Royal Engineers as a Sapper.  He landed in France in September 1915 and served with 613 Coy RE. He was demobbed in 1920.
