George Arthur Stuart was born in Derby on 16th April 1908. A territorial with the 5th Bn Sherwood Foresters, a newspaper article from  after his capture stated;

 

' Mrs D V Stuart of 16 Jackson street, Derby has been officially notified that her husband Corporal George Arthur Stuart (32) is a Prisoner of War in Germany. A Territorial, he was called up on August 23rd and went with the Sherwood Foresters to France in the middle of November. He was home on leave in March and was reported missing on 25th June. The son of Mr and Mrs A Staurt of 26 Parliament Street Derby, Corporal Stuart, was employed by the Refuge Assurance Company before the war. He was formerly a bell-ringer at St Luke's Church, Derby and a member of the Severs Guild'. 

 

Stuart was held in Schubin XXIB in Poland between July and August 1940. In Lammsdorf  Stalag 344 in Germany in 1941. He was made to work in Sawmills in the Sudetenland and Ober Silesia between June 1942 and January 1945.
