James Hurst was born in York in 1871. A Labourer by trade, he attested on 20th August 1890 at Woolwich. He had previously served in the 3rd West Yorks Militia. 
 
Hurst served in South Africa from 22nd October 1899 until 3rd September 1902. His service papers state he was wounded to the left wrist; however, the date and location are not given. 
 
Discharged 4th September 1902 after 12 years service.
