James Hewitt was born in Harworth, Worksop, Nottinghamshire, in 1878. He attested aged 21 on 7th December 1899, giving his occupation as Labourer. 
 
He served in South Africa from 7th November 1901 until 4th October 1902. The medal and bars are confirmed on the roll and in his service papers. James was discharged on 10th April 1903.
