Miss Ethel Goodall was born at Tunstall, Staffordshire, on the 25th February 1888. Having elected to pursue a nursing career, Miss Goodall undertook her training certificate at the City of Westminster Infirmary, Fulham Road, London, between 1908 and 1911. She is recorded in the 1911 Census Return, aged 24 years, working at this hospital, as an Infirmary Nurse employed on ‘Poor Law Work’.
 
On the outbreak of war, Miss Goodall offered her services to the Haden-Guest Unit, a hospital organised by Major L. Haden Guest, R.A.M.C, which was located at the Hotel Majestic in Paris. Miss Goodall is confirmed as having arrived in France on the 5th September 1914, later serving with the Hopital Temporaire, at Arc-en-Barrois, a unit that had been established under the auspices of the British Committee of the French Red Cross, She returned to England in January 1915.
 
On her return from France, Miss Goodall was appointed Lady Superintendent at the Streatham Auxiliary Red Cross Hospital with effect from 7th May 1917. It was for her services at this hospital that she was awarded the Royal Red Cross (Associate), the award being announced in the London Gazette dated 4th April 1919; the award being personally presented by His Majesty King George V at an Investiture held on at Buckingham Palace. Resigning her position on the 30th April 1919, Miss Goodall. 
 
Miss Goodall is recorded in the 1939 Register as Matron of the Seaside Convalescent Hospital, Bramber Lane, Seaford, her date of birth being confirmed as 25th February 1888.
