James Alfred Clark was born in Forest Gate, Essex on the 16th of March 1894. The son of Thomas John and Elizabeth, at the time of the 1911 census, the family lived at The Duke of York pub on the High Street in Epping. James was working at a Greengrocers before he enlisted. A photograph I found online (credit Gary Stone) shows the pub in 1912, which appears to have a Greengrocers attached.
 
Clark joined up at Stratford in Essex, and was assigned to the 3rd battalion of the Essex Regiment. He landed in France on the 12th of December 1914. 
 
James was sadly killed in action on the 15th of October 1916 during the Battle of the Somme ( The Battle of the Ancre Heights). He had been transferred to the 11th battalion and, at the time, was an Acting Corporal.
