Thomas Richard Riley served with the 1/8th ( Liverpool Irish) Bn of the Liverpool Regiment during the Great War. 
 
Riley landed in France with the Bn on 28th June 1915. His Military Medal was gazetted on 21st December 1916 and was a Somme award. The Liverpool Irish were in support of the attack of Ginchy on 9th September 1916, attacking Hope and Ale Alleys and Stout Trench. 
 
On the 26th / 27th of September, the 1st/8th took part in a large-scale attack ' From Flers- Ligny Thilloy road on the left to junction Grid and Grid support Trenches with Factory Corner- Gueudecourt road on the right. Length of objective 800 yards from left to right.  
 
In all likelihood, Riley while have been awarded the MM for one of these actions. On the 26th May 1917, his award of the Al Valore Militare in Bronze was gazetted. 
 
Riley survived the War.
