George Samuel Yates was born in Nottingham in 1889. In civilian life, he was a Police Officer.
 
During the Great War, he served with the 7th Bn Notts & Derby Regiment, the Robin Hood Rifles, having been a pre-war territorial. 
 
He landed in France on 26th June 1915. On 1st July 1916, the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, Yates was wounded to the left leg by machine gun fire and then taken prisoner by the Germans; this is confirmed in German records. 
 
The Robin Hood Rifles moved forward from Foncquevillers to attack Gommecourt; they were checked by machine gun fire and driven back. Of the 536 men who went forward, 409 became casualties.
 
George survived captivity and passed away in Nottingham in 1978.
