Thomas Renphrey was born in Sunderland on 25 September 1920, and attested for the Royal Norfolk Regiment in June 1939. He didn't excel as a soldier, to begin with, and was consistently in trouble, spending short terms imprisoned or confined to barracks. 
 
His service papers state he suffered wounds during WW2 ' Numerous small wounds of right hand and a few on right side of face, moderate severity.' 
 
Discharged in 1946, he was recalled in 1950 for service in the Korean War; he was later posted to the 1st Bn Gloucestershire Regiment and served with them during the War.
