Thomas was a pre-war regular. In 1911, he was serving as a Sergeant with the 3rd Bn Worcestershire Regiment at Shaft Barracks, Western Heights, Dover. Lenoard, in 1911, was working as an Architect's Draughtsman and living in Langley.

 

When war broke out, Thomas, as part of the BEF landed in France on the 12th of August 1914. Little over two months later, he won the Distinguished Conduct Medal;

 

'For conspicuous gallantry during the campaign, notably on 15th October 1914, near Richebourg St. Vaast, when he went out and brought in a severely wounded Officer under very heavy fire, being himself wounded in doing so '.

 

The DCM was gazetted on the 22nd of June, 1915.

 

Leonard followed his brother into the army and joined the 1/6th Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment. On the 1st of July 1916, the Bn attacked The Quadrilateral; although they passed through the objective, they suffered extremely heavy casualties from machine gunfire. Being reduced to less than 100 men. Sadly, Leonard was killed in the attack and is remembered at Thiepval Memorial.

 

Tragically, six days later, Thomas, now an Acting Warrant Officer, was killed in action on the 7th of July 1916 during the fighting around the Leipzig Salient. He, too, is remembered on the Theipval memorial.
