Robert Sparrow Zastrow was born in Sunderland in 1899. At the time of the 1911 census, he was living at 28 Church St Monk Wearmouth and attending school.
 
Zastrow served with Royal Engineers during the Great War. He was entitled to a pair only. The medal index card shows he was renumbered 398115.
