Tom Carr was born in Kilcurran, Tuam, Galway, Ireland, in 1863. He attested, aged 19 on 23rd March 1882 at Derby, giving his occupation as Farm Labourer.
 
He received an accidental wound on the 25th September 1886, a cut to the forehead likely received during training. Carr took part in the 1888 Sikkim Expedition with the 2nd Bn Derbyshire Regiment and was awarded an IGS. 
 
Again, on 24th June 1889, he was wounded while off duty, with another cut to the face. Probably the result of a fight. He was treated for Gonorrhea eleven times and Syphilis three times within eight years of service. 
 
Carr was transferred to the reserves on 11th March 1890 and discharged on 1st December 1894.
