John McClay was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 20th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers ( 1st Tyneside Scottish)  on the 3rd of November 1914. 
 
He was transferred to the 22nd Bn and promoted to Captain on the 13th of March 1915. He saw service in France and was awarded a British War Medal and Victory Medal.
 
The September 1921 Army List shows McClay as being on the Administration Staff of Mesopotamia Force, serving as Deputy Assistant Director of the Inland Water Transport. 
 
His MIC confirms the medal was awarded to him as a Major in the Northumberland Fusiliers. McClay's address is given as Edinburgh.
