Bertram Croft was a member of the 1st battalion, the Kings Royal Rifle Corps. He landed in France on 20 December 1914.
 
Croft was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal South of Miraumont on 17 February 1917. The original citation gazetted 17/14/17 is as follows;
 
‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He single-handed took a machine gun forward and opened fire on the enemy, thereby greatly assisting in repelling an enemy attack.’

“South Of Miraumont” was part of the “Battle of Boom Ravine”, the first major action of 1917 to completely drive the Germans from the Somme battlefields. As it was the Germans were about to make a tactical retreat anyway to their new defensive positions on the Hindenberg Line.
 
Bertram survived the war and was discharged in April 1919.
